As if the assorted problems with the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics weren’t enough, the city in Brazil is experiencing disruptive winds on Day 2 of the games. On Sunday, it was reported by NBC Olympics that strong winds forced the rowing competition to be postponed.

Initially, it was reported that the bad winds had delayed the start of the Olympic rowing events at Lagoa Stadium in Rio by two hours. However, as weather problems continued to remain an issue, the race was eventually called off just before 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

The wind was shown in multiple social media posts including one showing a blown over sign. Several tweets emerged on Twitter showing the power of the winds today, including one that showed a wind storm at the Olympic village.

Another report from USA Today indicates that wind forced the dining hall in the athletes’ village to close. It was also reported that several courts were delayed for today’s tennis venue, while the match at the main stadium went forth as planned.

However, Team USA’s Lauren Kendrick and Brooke Sweat were able to continue with their volleyball match at Copacabana Beach, eventually prevailing 21-14 in their first set over the Poland duo they faced.

You have to give it up for the ability of those women’s volleyball players to power through the conditions, although wind can certainly be rough on rowers and tennis players in their chosen sports!
