On Sunday, New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez held a press conference to officially announce his retirement. While he will retire from playing baseball with the Yankees, he will still stay around as a special advisor for the team, helping to mentor minor league players.

According to Sports Illustrated, the final game for A-Rod will be on this coming Friday at Yankee Stadium. He’ll have at least three games in Fenway Park against the Red Sox, as part of his final five games in baseball.

As one might expect fans all over are reacting to the big news. In particular, Twitter users have been reacting to the news, with users wishing him well, among other things. The hashtag “#Arod” was a top trend as of Sunday morning.

While never an easy decision for athletes, at 41 years old, Rodriguez has decided it’s time to hang up the cleats and he will retire as a Yankee. However, his career has spanned the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers before arriving at what many consider his official “home.” That said, he has certainly had a controversial but legendary career for the sport he loves and it shows in the various Twitter reactions to his retirement.

With five games to go, it should certainly be interesting to see how fans will receive him at Fenway Park, home of the biggest Yankee rival in history, the Boston Red Sox. However, boos or cheers will still show respect to a player that many fans hold in high regard for his MLB contributions.
