MLB Rumors: 5 teams Alex Rodriguez could come out of retirement for
By John Buhler
While this is a highly unlikely scenario since Rodriguez has never played in the National League and would really just be a spot starter/pinch hitter/designated hitter at this stage of his career, one way that he could get back at the Yankees is to suit up for the city rival New York Mets of the Senior Circuit.
Rodriguez wouldn’t have to move, could still earn decent money playing for one of baseball’s richest franchises, and New York could look vastly different once manager Terry Collins steps out of the dugout and retires in a few short years.
New York’s window for postseason relevance is right now. The Mets should be able to contend for a World Series for at least the next three years with their loaded rotation and solid bats in the lineup. Rodriguez has really only had one decent postseason. Ironically, that was the only title the Yankees won with him back in 2009.
Right-handed power coming of the bench would help any postseason roster. Given that Rodriguez has already dealt with about as much New York media scrutiny as humanly possible, he would really have nothing to lose if he should join the Mets in the next two seasons. Would the Mets want to bring in Rodriguez is any entirely different issue.
Next: 4. Tampa Bay Rays.
