5 NBA players who should make a comeback
By Matt Couden
4. Allen Iverson, age 40
Allen Iverson called it a career after the 2009-10 season, where he finished his basketball playing days with the team that became a star with. “AI” will always be identified as one of the all-time greats to put on a Philadelphia 76ers uniform, as his career numbers were highest when playing in Philly. He won the league’s MVP award and nearly led the Sixers to an NBA title.
During his farewell season, he still managed to put up just under 14 points per game, dish out over four assists and grab about three rebounds per contest. That was six years ago, and now Iverson is 41 years old. That’s just a year younger than fellow guard Derek Fisher, who also wants to try a comeback.
Iverson, the No. 1 pick in the 1996 NBA Draft, was one of the league’s more controversial but also popular stars. Throughout a lengthy career, he appeared in the All-Star game 11 times, won the MVP award in 2001 and was a four-time scoring champion. He did all of that at the height of just six-feet tall, showing just how impressive an athlete he could be.
For all those wondering if it’s a good idea for the Sixers star to return to the court, just imagine this: There’s a scramble for the ball under the opponents’ basket. Iverson comes up with the ball on a fast break, drives towards the three-point line, and then in impressive fake-out-fashion, throws a no-look alley-oop pass to brand new No. 1 pick, Ben Simmons. It’s the stuff that dreams are made of for fans in Philly.
So is there any question for Philadelphia? There’s always “The Answer” waiting in the wings.
