Michael Phelps won his 20th gold medal and the internet went nuts

Michael Phelps is already one of the greatest Olympians of all time, and whatever he did in Rio wasn’t going to change that. However, he set the tone early when he played a pivotal part in USA’s Gold medal for the 4x100m relay, and his next big race would give him a chance to avenge a rare second place finish that he suffered in London.

When he lost to Chad le Clos in the 200 m butterfly, you had to think that Phelps had this race circled on his calendar. And after Phelps’ death stare broke the Internet, the pressure was on him to deliver a Gold in the event.
While Phelps didn’t lead wire to wire, he did beat out Le Clos as well as Laszlo Cseh, his closest competitor throughout, to win his 20th Gold medal, an incredible accomplishment. As expected, Twitter could only lavish him with praise afterwards:
Michael Phelps. Gold number 20.

Can hardly swim myself, but golly, that was the most exciting stretch of swimming I've ever seen. That #1 finger from Phelps was Bird-esque.

After Chad Le Clos beat him out back in London, Phelps wanted to do everything in his power to get this race back. Not only did he beat out Le Clos, Le Clos didn’t even end up on the podium. He’ll feel really bitter afterwards, to be sure, but in the end, losing to Phelps after beating him is nothing to be ashamed of.
But after provoking that reaction from him, he brought it upon himself.
