Kyrie Irving gives Draymond Green NBA Finals flashbacks
Kyrie Irving hit a shot to clinch Wednesday’s game against Australia, drawing comparisons to his NBA Finals-clinching shot.
The U.S. men’s basketball team has not lost a single game in Olympic play since the disappointing 2004 Olympics in Athens, but they were faced with a true test Wednesday against Australia. The Australian squad started five NBA players, led by Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova, and held a five-point lead at halftime over the U.S. squad, but a strong third quarter gave the U.S. the lead, which they held on to for a 98-88 victory.
The game was close with just under two minutes when Australia cut the lead to 90-86 in favor of the U.S., but Kyrie Irving hit a dagger three-pointer to seal the game. This sounds familiar.
Ah yes, Irving hit a similar shot in Game 7 of the NBA Finals to give the Cleveland Cavaliers the lead in the final minute of the game en route to the franchise’s first championship and Cleveland’s first professional sports title since 1964. Draymond Green, who is a teammate of Irving’s on Team USA, was helpless as Irving defeated his Golden State Warriors in the Finals, but was on the right side of the ball this time around. Only he may have had a few flashbacks.

Irving is sure to rub it in a bit, but both players are NBA champions so Green should be able to get over it rather quickly. The focus now has to be on winning a third-straight gold medal and continuing the United States’ dominant reign in Olympic basketball.
