High winds in the area have caused the International Olympic Committee and World Rowing to cancel rowing events for day 5 of the summer Olympics. The women’s and men’s quadruple sculls finals were scheduled to be held today in Rio’s Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon.
World Rowing made the announcement via their Twitter account.
This is the second cancellation for rowing events at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio. The first came on day 2 of the games, as two boats were capsized before the beginning of the day’s events.
No doubt a disappointing announcement for the team’s competing for medals on Wednesday. The team USA women will be looking to return to the podium in the quadruple sculls following a bronze medal in London in 2012. Two of the four members of the quadruple sculls team, Megan Kalmoe and Adrienne Martelli, return from that 2012 team.
The United States does not have a men’s team competing in the quadruple sculls in Rio. On the men’s side, Australia, Estonia and Ukraine are all heavily favored to reach the podium.
Also canceled for Wednesday were scheduled heats for the men’s’ four rowing competitions. The United States was returning after claiming the bronze medal in London as well, hoping to capitalize on a fast start to the heats earlier in the week.
No rescheduling announcement has been made yet and is expected to be made later in the week.
