Olympics Archery results, August 10: Women’s top-seed advances

The 2016 Rio Olympics archery competition is now down to 16 archers for both the men and women, as the Rounds of 64 and 32 finished on Wednesday.

Wednesday marked the end of the Rounds of 64 and 32 in the individual archery competition for the 2016 Rio Olympics. The biggest name on the women’s side advanced on Wednesday, though the number-three seed for the men’s competition went down in the Round of 32. The action will continue tomorrow, as the women go for the the gold.

South Korea’s Choi Mi-sun easily coasted to the Round of 16, as the top-seed in the women’s bracket beat Taiwan’s Le Chien-ying to advance. Throughout her two matches on Wednesday, Mi-sun won by a combined score of 12-2, exerting her dominance in the event. Mi-sun already has won a gold in the team competition this Olympics.

Fourth-seeded Tan Ya-ting of Taiwan also advanced on Wednesday, as did eighth-seeded Alejandra Valencia, but ninth-ranked Lin Shih-chia of Taiwan fell in the Round of 32.

Over in the men’s competition, the highest seed in the bracket fell on Wednesday, with Italy’s David Pasqualucci losing in the Round of 32 to Antonio Fernandez of Spain. Fernandez is ranked 35th in the competition, so the loss came as quite a shock.

2012 London Olympics silver medalist Takaharu Furukawa of Japan earned the right to possibly win a gold in 2016 by throttling his competition on Wednesday. After disposing of Mitch Dielemans of the Netherlands in the opening round, Furukawa blanked Norway’s Bard Nesteng to advance to the Round of 16.

The women will battle for their medals on Thursday, as the final 16 will be whittled down to the medalists. The men go for their medals on Friday.
