Nigeria entered the Olympics in high spirits and with high expectations. An influx of talented youngsters headlined by Alex Iwobi, a player who was ironically blocked from joining up with his international teammates due to Arsenal and Arsene Wenger wanting to keep him at the club for the first week of the season, saw the aspirations of the Nigerian media elevate through the roof, and rightly so.
It is a talented squad with As Roma striker Umar Sadiq scoring the winner in a tight 1-0 win over Sweden and John Obi-Mikel being selected as one of their three over 23 players, and the ‘Dream Team’ – the name that has optimistically ascribed by Nigerian media – have delivered, winning both of their games so far and now have already secured top spot of Group B, qualifying for the quarter-finals in the process. It is a tremendous achievement but does not negate the influence of this match with Colombia.
Their South American counterparts sit second on two points, but a win for either Japan or Sweden in the group’s other match will see them out the tournament. They will hope that Nigeria rest some of their star players for the knockout rounds and can secure that crucial victory. However, the stars of the group are Nigeria, and they will be bullish about their potential medal hopes.
