Chicago’s late inning reliever will have arthroscopic surgery and is expected to be out from 4-6 weeks.

The Chicago Cubs lost one of their key relievers when it was announced today that Pedro Strop was placed on the 15-day disabled list after an MRI revealed a meniscus tear in his left knee, according to the Chicago Tribune. He is expected to miss between 4-6 weeks.

The club has recalled RHP Justin Grimm from Triple-A team Iowa.

The 31-year old Dominican was injured while attempting to field a grounder by the Angels’ Yunel Escobar when his foot stuck in the ground. Third baseman Javier Baez had to grab Strop to keep him from throwing to first.

“I heard a pop, but there wasn’t any sharp pain,” Strop told the paper. “I walked back to the mound, and I couldn’t straighten my leg. That’s why I thought I couldn’t walk. But at the beginning, I didn’t think it was that bad, because I never felt a sharp pain. I couldn’t walk, so I was thinking I might be out for the season.”

In his eighth major league season, Strop has been solid as a late-inning reliever going 2-2 with a 2.89 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 50 games. He has struck out 53 and been credited with 21 holds.

Grimm, 27, had appeared in just one game for Iowa and has spent the bulk of the season with Chicago going 1-0 with a 4.58 ERA (18 ER/35.1 IP) in 46 relief appearances. In 35.1 innings, he has fanned 40 while limiting opponents to a .235 batting average, including a .195 mark by right-handed hitters.
