Olympic fencing continued Wednesday with the women’s individual foil tournament as well as the men’s individual sabre event. This was the last opportunity for Team USA to earn individual medals at the 2016 Olympics before starting team events on Thursday. Prior to Wednesday, the only American medalist was Alexander Massialas, who won a silver medal on Sunday in the men’s individual foil.
While the Team USA women didn’t make it to the quarterfinals, the men’s team was represented by Daryl Homer, who defeated Matyas Szabo of Germany 15-12 in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals. Homer edged Morjtaba Abedini of Iraq 15-14 to reach the finals, where he fell to Aron Szilagyi of Hungary 8-15.
