Olympics Men’s Basketball: Lithuania vs Argentina
As Group B takes the floor at the 2016 Rio Olympics men’s basketball competition on Day 6 of the Games, it feels relatively safe to say that Lithuania and Argentina have both looked like potential dark horses out of the group that could compete for a medal. While they are both well respected teams, they simply weren’t expected to play quite at the level that they’ve shown to this point. Now these two teams are slated to square off with one another on Thursday at Carioca Arena 1 to battle for real momentum as the knockout rounds loom large.
Lithuania started off their run in Rio by looking like they were going to obliterate the host nation of Brazil. However, the Lithuanians blew a 30-point lead and found themselves in a fourth-quarter battle against the Brazilians. They ultimately picked up the win, but you could tell there was a bit of a hangover in their second game as they seemed out of sorts despite picking up the win against Nigeria. They’ll want to make sure they have their mentality correct coming up against an Argentina team that’s been fantastic thus far.
For Argentina, they’ve too been up against Nigeria, but they had far less trouble than Lithuania. The Argentinians trounced them by 28 points in their first game from Rio and rode that momentum into their second game. In that second matchup. That second game was against Croatia, a team that had been looking great, and Argentina was able to get a small cushion and hold on for the victory to start 2-0.
