The Final Five dominated the competition yet again at the 2016 Rio Olympics, as Simone Biles and Aly Raisman finished 1-2 in the women’s individual all-around.

Simone Biles cemented her place in Olympics gymnastics history with a dominant performance to take gold in the women’s all-around final on Thursday at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Teammate Aly Raisman came from behind in the last rotation to win silver, continuing an impressive Games for the American women.

The American duo started on the vault, with the latter tallying a 15.633, slightly down from her earlier scores due to a small hop on the landing. Biles had a similar hop on her dismount in one of her first mistakes of the entire competition, but her high degree of difficulty still helped her score a 15.866 and take the early lead.

Medal contender Rebeca Andrade of Brazil got off to a strong start with a 15.566 to move just behind Raisman in third. While Russia’s Aliya Mustafina’s score of 15.200 was down from her qualification round, she was still in fifth after the first rotation with her best events coming up.

All the top contenders then moved to the uneven bars, where Mustafina was expected to make a move up the leaderboard. The London 2012 gold medalist completed a strong routine to score a 15.666 and move into first, although again she was better in qualifying.

Meanwhile, Raisman uncharacteristically missed a few connections and had another poor landing to score only a 14.166 and slid to fourth. The bars have been Biles’ weakest rotation, but a 14.966 was good enough for her to maintain contact in second with better routines to come. Russia’s Seda Tutkhalian moved passed Raisman and Andrade into third with a 15.033 on the bars.

The top group went to the beam for the third rotation, with Biles starting things off. While her routine wasn’t quite as flawless as we’ve seen in the past, a picture-perfect dismount gave Biles the lead back with a score of 15.433.

Mustafina went with a very conservative beam routine to avoid a fall and had a small mistake on the landing, posting a 13.866. Tutkhalian fell on her dismount, giving Raisman a chance to get back into medal contention.

Raisman finally performed a routine up to her standards on the beam, as a 14.866 moved her into third, one-tenth of a point out of second heading into the floor routine. Despite not being in the top group, Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber rose to fourth with an excellent floor routine, and was within striking distance if the top three were to make any mistakes.

Mustafina was first up and needed a strong floor exercise to hold off Raisman in one of her weaker rotations. A solid enough routine with no mistakes gave Mustafina a 13.933, all but ensuring herself a place on the podium and putting some heat on Raisman.

Raisman dealt with the pressure, putting together her best floor routine of the competition with a 15.433 to finish nearly a point and a half ahead of Mustafina in silver medal position, avenging a difficult fourth place finish in London.

Just needing to avoid complete disaster, Biles finished the all-around with a 15.933, bringing her overall score to a unheard of 62.198, two points clear of Raisman. Mustafina won the all-around bronze for the second straight Olympics.
