Rio Olympics medal count 2016: Simone Manuel, Michael Phelps make history
Updated 2016 Rio Olympics medal count after Simone Manuel and Michael Phelps ended Day 6 in historic fashion
Yet another day at the 2016 Rio Olympics and yet another day when history is made. Moreover, it was another day that jam-packed with some of the best competition and most excitement you’ll ever see. And once again, it was another day when there was serious movement in the Olympics medal count. Even at the end of Day 6 at Rio 2016 ending with swimming once again, there were still big results.
The day’s finale with the swimming events saw the Women’s 200m Butterfly and Men’s 200m Backstroke events to start. Those gold medals were won by Rie Kaneto of Japan and Ryan Murphy of the US, respectively. However, that was just setting the stage for Michael Phelps vs Ryan Lochte in the Men’s 200m IM final.
Despite that these two athletes have been going at one another in this event for almost a decade now, this wasn’t close. Michael Phelps isn’t human and dominated the race. At 31 years old, the record-setter almost set a world record, winning the gold medal. He only added to his ridiculous and historic total of 22 gold medals 26 overall medals won at the Olympics.
However, the historic night in US Swimming was just getting started. In the final medal event of the night, Simone Manuel was looking to shock in the Women’s 100m Freestyle final. After trailing the top three at the turn, she made a mad spring. In the end, she tied for the gold medal with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak. By winning gold, Manuel became the first African American to win a medal for Team USA Swimming.
