Round 3 action of the 2016 Rio Olympics golf competition is scheduled for Saturday, as Australia’s Marcus Fraser looks to hang on to his one-stroke lead.
The 2016 Rio Olympics Men’s golf competition continues on Saturday, as Round 3 action is schedule to kick off at 6:30am ET. Australia’s Marcus Fraser is clinging to a one-shot lead heading into the weekend, after shooting a 2-under-69 in Round 2. He opened up the tournament with an incredible 8-under-63, but came back to earth on Friday.
Right behind Fraser is Belgium’s Thomas Pieters, who has been the most consistent golfer through the first two days. Pieters followed up a 4-under-67 in round one with a 5-under-66, taking sole possession of second place.
2016 Open Championship winner Henrik Stenson is -8 for the tournament, shooting a 3-under-68 on Friday. The Swedish golfer is one of the hottest golfers on the PGA Tour right now, and seems to have carried over his recent success to Rio.
Friday’s best round belonged to Danny Lee of New Zealand, who erased his 1-over-72 from Thursday by shooting a 65 on Friday. Lee moved up 28 spots in the standings, and now is tied for sixth place heading into the weekend.
Golf is back in the Olympics for the first time in 112 years, having last been played back in 1904 when St. Louis, Missouri hosted the Summer Games. The event was viewed as having lost some of its shine when the top-four ranked golfers in the world skipped it, but the competition is still very strong.
