Following a very impressive run in the group stage, Brazil is well on its way to the semifinals in women’s soccer, with only Australia standing in the way.  Brazil finished first in group E with a record of 2-0-1. In the opening match of the Olympics, the home team throttled China PR 3-0, before dismantling Sweden 5-1 in the second match. Brazil then fought South Africa to a 0-0 draw — the only time in the tournament where it didn’t look poised for a medal run. Brazil failed to reach the semifinals in 2012, on the heels of two consecutive silver-medal finishes in ’04 and ’08, and there will be not a little drive for redemption this time around. This time around, however, Brazil will have a very strong Australian team standing in their way.

For their part, the Aussies will be trying to reach the semifinals for the first time in team history. In 2004 they were unable to move past the quarterfinals, before failing to qualify in both 2008 and 2012. The Matildas, who ended the group F stage in third place after a convincing 6-1 win over Zimbabwe, will need to be in top form against this very talented Brazilian team. Needless to say, Australia will be looking for en encore performance Friday, as it attempts to play the role of spoiler and move past the favored Brazilians on their home turf.
