As the women’s soccer tournament moves out of the group stage and into the quarterfinals, Canada, coming off a galvanizing win over Germany, will have its mettle tested against a very strong French side. Indeed, Canada — a strong team that took home the bronze in 2012 — is the only team in the tournament to win all three of its group stage matches, and will need to keep up the momentum heading into the quarterfinals. Canada also tallied wins over Zimbabwe, Germany and Australia.
On the heels of a win over New Zealand, France is believed to be one of the strongest teams in the tournament, having finished group play with a record of 2-1. France’s only loss came at the feet of the mighty USA in the second game of group play, but had no problem with New Zealand, which they pummeled 3-0, before trouncing Columbia 4-0. Solid as it is, France will have to play near-flawlessly against this top-notch Canadian side. Indeed, following a disappointing fourth place finish at the 2012 Olympics, France will be determined to medal in 2016.
The two teams will square off at the Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo. This will be the third match of the day, and can be seen on CNBC.
