Olympics volleyball results: Team USA remains perfect – August 12

Recapping the fourth round of pool play matches in the women’s volleyball tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Friday’s slate in Rio featured another six matches in the women’s volleyball tournament, including another victory for Team USA.

The United States remained perfect for the tournament with a four-set victory over winless Italy and is now two points ahead in the Pool B standings. Italy surprised Team USA by keeping close throughout the match and winnings its first set of the Games in the third, but eventually dropped the match 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20. Karsta Lowe had her best game in Rio, totaling 12 points on 12 spikes.

Serbia had the most impressive victory of the day, sweeping China to move into second in Pool B with nine points. Tijana Boskovic had 19 points as the Serbians were never really threatened by the Chinese, who are still in good shape to advance to the quarterfinals with nine points.

Elsewhere in Pool B, the Netherlands comfortably swept winless Puerto Rico and now also have nine points in the tournament.

Argentina and Cameroon opened Pool A action on Friday, both searching for their first points of the tournament. The Argentinians narrowly won the fifth and deciding set 15-13 to keep a faint hope of advancing to the knockout stages alive.

Russia remained perfect and moved to the top of the Pool A standings with a 25-14, 30-28, 25-18 sweep over Japan. Natalya Goncharova had 20 points to lead the Russians, who could be the top threat to the United States in the medal rounds down the line.

Friday’s schedule closed with the most interesting match of the day in Pool A, as Brazil met South Korea. The hosts continued their undefeated run with a 25-17, 25-13, 27-25 sweep to match Russia at the top of the group.
