Olympics women’s handball results: August 12th
Looking at the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s handball results from Friday, August 12 and Day 7 of the Games
With only two match days left in the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s handball preliminary round, the stakes were high on Friday. A win could mean moving into the knockout round. Contrarily, a loss could mean an exit from the competition prematurely. Subsequently, an already exciting competition heated up even more for Day 7 from Rio 2016. All 12 Olympics women’s handball teams were in action, looking to make any kind of head-room that they could.
Looking to rebound after a few tough outings, the host nation of Brazil started Day 7. They took on an Angola team making surprising noise in Rio. However, it was the favored Brazilians that were able to pick up the victory in Group A. Out in Group B, Sweden and Netherlands started off the action on Friday. This was an even matchup from the start and it played out like so. The two teams finished tied to earn a point apiece in the standing at a time when any points are crucial.
Romania taking on Spain followed that Sweden-Netherlands matchup and was almost as equally matched. Romania has come on strong at the back end of the preliminary round and did so once again on Day 7. They earned a three-goal win over a talented Spain team to put themselves in position to potentially advance. Russia and Argentina also went to war on the handball court and they too played it close. However, the Group B leaders in Russia pulled away from the winless Argentinians to pick up the six-goal win.
The final match from Group A saw the defending gold medalist in Norway taking on Montenegro. Norway started out this competition less than ideally to say the least as they lost their opener. They’ve recovered well, though, and continued doing so Friday with a win over Montenegro. Friday’s finale featured France and South Korea, a matchup won by France.
