Benny Cunningham took off for 14 yards into the end zone to score the first Rams touchdown back in Los Angeles

21 years had passed since there was NFL football in Los Angeles. On Saturday night, the Los Angeles Rams changed that as they took the field against the Dallas Cowboys to start their NFL preseason. The Rams didn’t start off their return ideally as they fell behind 14-0 quickly to the Cowboys. However, they were finally able to give fans something to cheer about in LA, thanks to the work on the ground from Benny Cunningham.

With Todd Gurley not playing on Saturday night for the Los Angeles opener, Cunningham was able to get his reps in. After helping to spearhead a drive down the field, the Rams had the ball in the red zone. They dialed Cunningham’s number once more and the back scampered 14 yards before finding his way into the end zone for the first touchdown back in Los Angeles for the Rams:

As DJ Khaled would say, they didn’t want him to get into the end zone—so he got into the end zone.

Cunningham definitely showed off a nifty piece of running with that score, breaking tackles along the way and not going down until he crossed the goal line. However, the merits of the run itself fall short in regards to the historic significance of the moment.

It’s been a long journey for the Rams and for professional football to get back to Los Angeles. With the Cowboys scoring twice first, it probably felt anti-climactic even to have the NFL back in LA. However, that Cunningham touchdown brought back the luster of his team’s return in a big, big way.
