Comic book fans voted for the DC Rebirth books with their wallets in July, helping DC ship eight of the top 10 books.

Whether it’s a commentary on how much lapsed DC Comics fans were ready to jump back in after being turned off by the New 52 or just a hunger for something different, DC Rebirth was a massive success in July.

The numbers reported this week by Diamond Comic Distributors (and passed along by Comic Book Resources) bear this out. DC dominated the top 10 chart of single issue comic sales in July, claiming all but two spots.

Justice League #1, Justice League Rebirth #1 and Batman #2 swept the podium, as it were. DC also had books in the 5-6 spots and at numbers 8-10 — including New Super Man #1, which has to be an encouraging sign since it stars a brand new character.

Marvel’s only top 10 books for July were the two issues of Civil War II that it shipped. Not surprisingly, DC managed a rare win in both market share (40.96 percent to 35.69 percent) and dollar share (much closer at 35.36 percent to 34.20 percent) for the month.

The latter margin was closer due to the price points on DC’s top sellers, which were all at $2.99. It’s pretty clear that fans prefer the lower cover price — new comics have been $3.99 and up for several years in most cases — but it remains to be seen if DC can profitably hold the line there.

And there’s more good news for DC as well, since Rebirth continues this month. Notable August releases that have yet to hit the shelves include Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #1, Blue Beetle Rebirth #1 and Deathstroke #1.
