The 2016 Women’s 3m springboard competition continues on Saturday, as the 18 remaining women take to the board for the semifinals.
Saturday will be the second day of competition in the 2016 Rio Olympics Women’s 3m springboard, as the remaining 18 divers head to the board for a spot in the finals. After Saturday, there will only be 12 divers remaining, all of whom will get five dives in the finals. China has some solid divers, but there are more than a few others who could take the gold.
During the preliminaries on Friday, Canada’s Jennifer Abel shocked the Chinese divers, posting the best overall score. China’s He Zi and Shi Tingmao are expected to finish 1-2 in this event, after winning the gold in the synchronized competition earlier in the week. In fact, China has not lost in the Olympics in any 3m springboard competition since 1988.
Italian diver Tania Cagnotto also put on a good show on Friday, finishing with the fourth-best score of the prelims. Cagnotto finished fourth in the 2012 London Olympics in the 3m springboard, so she will definitely be looking to advance to Sunday’s final for another shot at a medal. In 2012, she missed out on a bronze by only 0.20 points.
On Saturday, all 18 divers will get five dives, with no limit to difficulty. Olympic rules state that each of the five groups be represented: forward, backwards, twisting, reverse, and inward. In the semifinals, all scores from the prelims are wiped away, meaning every diver has a clean slate on Saturday.
The United States will be well represented on Saturday, as both Abigail Johnson and Kassidy Cook both qualified for the semis. Johnson and Cook finished sixth and eighth, respectively on Friday.
