Results from the Olympics Diving Women’s 3m Springboard semifinal for Saturday, August 13

The Olympics diving competition from Rio 2016 really started heating up on Day 8. As the women have been getting rolling in the Women’s 3m Springboard competition, the semifinal was held on Saturday, August 13. Per the Olympics diving rules, the top-12 scorers qualified for the finals on Sunday. Meanwhile, the two divers placing 13th and 14th would qualify as reserves.

As per usual as the Chinese team has dominated the sport, it was a pair of divers from China leading the way. Tingmao Shi finished first in the semifinal of the event, scoring a 385.00. She was followed by Zi He, who posted a 364.05. Despite He’s second place finish, Shi established that she’s in control of this event right now.

Following the two divers from China was Canada’s Jennifer Abel with a score of 343.45. There was then another big drop off before fourth and Australia’s Maddison Keeney at 326.35. The only American to qualify in the top-12 was fifth as Abigail Johnston posted a 324.75. That score was tied by Yan Yee Ng of Malaysia and almost achieved by Italy’s Tania Cagnotto in seventh.

The other divers who were able to qualify for Sunday’s final started off with Olena Fedorova of Ukraine. Pamela Ware of Canada, Esther Qin of Australia, Grace Reid of Great Britain, and Nora Subchinski of Germany rounded out the qualifiers. Team USA’s Kassidy Cook qualified as a reserve in 13th. Uschi Freitag of the Netherlands took the other reserve qualifier spot.

However, all of this sets up for what should be a fantastic final in the event. Though everyone’s clearly chasing Shi, all it takes is one masterful day above the pool to win gold. Or perhaps the semifinal served as a final preview. Subsequently, we’re left waiting to see what happens.
