Olympics Men’s Basketball: Croatia vs Nigeria
Coming to a close rapidly is the 2016 Rio Olympics men’s basketball competition preliminary round as there are only three days of games remaining. On Day 8 from Rio 2016, the penultimate matchups from Group B will be on display. Plenty of time remains for teams to try and improve their seeding and positioning. One team trying to do just that will be the young, talented squad from Croatia. They’ll be tasked with doing so against Nigeria on Saturday.
Croatia were expected to make a bit of noise in Rio, but were thought to possible be four years away. Their young core of Dario Saric, Bojan Bogdanovic, and Mario Hezonja have proved otherwise in Rio, though. They’ve won two of their first three matchups, falling only to a talented Argentina team. Now sitting third in Group B, a win against Nigeria on Day 8 could be huge. They could be in contention to win the group pending other results on Saturday if they grab their third victory.
On the other hand, Nigeria have had a rough go of things in Rio. They remain winless through their first three games and have been on the wrong end of at least one blowout. Even still, they’ve shown fight and not an ounce of quit throughout. Subsequently, they aren’t a team that Croatia or anyone else should be taking lightly. However, it’s clear that they indeed enter Saturday’s matchup against Saric and company as the underdogs.
