Olympics Men’s Basketball: Spain vs Lithuania
The excitement level in the 2016 Rio Olympics men’s basketball preliminary round is at an all-time high right now. On Day 8 of the Games, it’ll be the next-to-last match day in the group stage. With teams hitting their strides now, that could mean major shuffling in the group standings. Moreover, it could make for some wildly compelling action throughout Saturday, August 13. The biggest match of the day out of Group B undoubtedly stands as the huge clash between Spain and Lithuania.
Spain enters every Olympics or international tournament as one of the favorites to medal. That was the case at Rio 2016, but they faltered out of the gates in the preliminary round. After losing twice in two tough outings, Spain finally picked up a victory and two points their last time out. However, there’s no rest for them as Lithuania may very well be their toughest opponent yet. If they want to be in good position in the knockout rounds, a win on Saturday is all but necessary.
For Lithuania, quietly dominating has been their calling card to start their run in Rio. They’re 3-0 through their opening games and sit in sole possession of first place in Group B. While they’ve been tested thus far, Jonas Valanciunas and company will face their biggest test in Spain. Both teams are budding with experience together and with NBA-caliber talent. What should result is an absolutely superb matchup from Day 8.
