By Brad Weiss
Live stream info for how to watch the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics swimming Women’s 50m freestyle finals event on Saturday, August 13.
During the 2012 London Olympics, Netherland’s Ranomi Kromowidjojo set an Olympic record in the Women’s 50m freestyle, posting a blazing time of 24.05. The previous record was set in 2008, when Germany’s Britta Steffen clocked a 24.06 in the event. In 2016, Kromowidjojo will get an opportunity to defend her record, though she will have to beat a loaded field.
Two big names to watch during the 2016 Rio Olympics version of the Women’s 50m freestyle are Cate and Bronte Campbell, two sisters who play a huge role in this event. The Campbell sisters will be looking to strike gold for Australia, and it will be great to see them battle it out.
Another huge name in the field will be Simone Manuel of the United States. Manuel capitivated the world with her win in the Women’s 100m freestyle, becoming the first African-American to win a medal at a swimming event in the Olympics. The 50m is half the distance she had to travel to win her first gold, but in many respects, can be even harder.
Despite all these big names in the field, it was a swimmer from Denmark who had the fastest time in the semifinals. Pernille Blume raced to a time of 24.28 in the qualifying round, avenging her showing during the 2012 London Olympics. In London, Blume failed to make it out of the heats, and will now get to swim for a medal in Rio.
