Olympics Women’s Basketball: Australia vs Belarus
The 2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball preliminary round comes to a close over the next two days. On Day 8 of the Games on Saturday, August 13, the six teams in Group A will finish up their group stage contests and determine who moves on. The first matchup of the day out of Group A features an intriguing matchup between one team secure and one team fighting to stay alive. That’s why Australia vs Belarus looks quite compelling from the start.
First off, Australia have been rolling since the first day of the Olympics women’s basketball competition. Marianna Tolo and the rest of the Aussie women dominated most of the way through and sit atop Group A. They’re 4-0 as they enter Saturday’s matchup against Belarus. While the Aussies traveled to Rio as the silver medal favorites, a 5-0 start might give them the momentum to potentially vie for a gold medal against mighty Team USA.
However, Belarus has played a much different tournament thus far in Rio than Australia. Every game they’ve played has been decided by single digits throughout. Unfortunately, Belarus fell short in three of those four close matchups. That leaves them in fifth place in Group A where only the top-four advance. Therefore, the Belarus women will be desperately trying to pull off the upset on Saturday morning.
