Olympics Women’s Basketball: Japan vs France
Capping off the action in Group A of the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball preliminary round will be Japan and France on Saturday, August 13. Both teams are already likely through to the knockout rounds at this point. However, both teams could also stand to try and improve their seeding as France still could occupy the top spot. That makes the Day 8 result from their matchup all the more important from Rio 2016.
Japan started off this Olympics women’s basketball competition quite well. Right out of the gate, the Japanese women were able to earn two consecutive victories. Their last two results look far less favorable, however. Now they’re coming into this matchup with France having lost two straight and needing momentum. A victory over this talented France team surely aids their confidence moving forward, though, you have to think.
On the other hand, France has been one of the more imposing teams in the competition to this point. Despite some dicey games throughout the preliminary round, they have only one loss on their record. Moreover, that one loss came at the hands of the Group A leaders Australia. When you’ve only lost one game and that was against the favorites for silver, that’s a good look. Avoiding a misstep against Japan on Saturday will be vital for the French women, though. Gaining any kind of momentum could be key to them potentially competing for a medal in the days to come.
