Rio Olympics 2016: Twitter reacts to Michael Phelps’ last swim
See how Twitter reacted to the likely last lap of Michael Phelps’ glorious Olympics career.
Despite what many have said, swimmer Michael Phelps has announced that he will not be swimming in Tokyo at the 2020 Summer Olympics. To be fair, it’s not like Phelps has much to prove. What more can he accomplish? He has already won the most medals of any Summer Olympian and will go down in history as the greatest Summer Olympian of all-time.
Phelps is starting to get up there in age as well. He’s already 31 years old. He probably doesn’t want to bother with going to Tokyo at the age of 35 years old. Of course, he said that he was retiring after the 2012 Olympics in London. And he still came back and dominated in Rio. But this time, it feels different. Phelps seems 100 percent at ease with his career being over. This time, he doesn’t even have a reason to come back. He at least has some records to break at Rio. With that motivation gone, Phelps is likely done.

As expected, Phelps went out with a bang. He will leave the Olympics as a champion in the 4×100 medley relay. Phelps swam the butterfly portion of the relay. It’s appropriate that he did because that is the stroke that Phelps used to dominate the world. Phelps is the most deadly butterfly swimmer of all-time. He confirmed that tonight with yet another gold medal. Phelps will retire with an unheard of 23 gold medals in his glorious career.
