Rio Olympics medal count 2016: Michael Phelps captures 23rd gold medal

Updated 2016 Rio Olympics medal count after Day 8 and with Michael Phelps capturing his 23rd gold medal in his final race of his Olympic career

High drama was the name of the game in Rio on Saturday, August 13. Not only were there medals being won by the bunches throughout the day, but there was also narrative. In one of the final events of the night, Michael Phelps swam the final race of his Olympic career. While doing so, he looked to add another medal to his total and to Team USA’s total in the Rio Olympics medal count.

Starting with the biggest event of Day 8, Phelps did indeed capture one more gold medal. Team USA flirted with a world record in the 4x100m Medley Relay, but managed just an Olympic record to win gold. The United States added three other medals to their total in other swimming events as well.

Puerto Rico also won their first gold medal ever in tennis thanks to Monica Puig in Women’s singles. Moreover, Jamaica won their first medals in Rio, getting gold and bronze in the Women’s 100m in track.

Rowing, weightlifting, tennis, and many other events throughout the day awarded medals. In the end, the Rio Olympics medal count underwent major changes on Saturday.
