Olympics gymnastics results: August 14
Simone Biles won gold in the vault final to headline the gymnastics action on Monday at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Team USA’ strong gymnastics effort continued with three medals in event finals on Monday in Rio, including another gold for Simone Biles.
Biles outclassed the competition once again in the vault final, winning her third gold of the Rio Games with a score of 15.966. After scoring a 15.800 on her first attempt, Biles had one of her best performances of the Olympics with a 16.033 on her second vault.
Maria Paseka of Russia won silver with a score of 15.253, narrowly beating Gulia Steingruber of Switzerland. Dipa Karmakar, India’s first Olympic gymnast, finished just shy of the podium in fourth.
After her performance on the uneven bars propelled her to bronze in the all-around, Russia’s Aliya Mustafina took gold in the event final on Sunday with a score of 15.900. Team USA’s Madison Kocian took silver with a 15.833 after winning the qualification round, ahead of Germany’s Sophie Scheder in third.
Great Britain won its first ever gold in men’s gymnastics to open the morning, as Max Whitlock scored a 15.633 to take home the floor exercise title. Whitlock previously won bronze in the individual all-around, the country’s first gymnastics medal of any kind in 108 years.
Diego Hypolito and Arthur Mariano of Brazil thrilled the home fans by taking home silver and bronze. World champion Kenzo Shirai and individual all-around gold medalist Kohei Uchimura of Japan finished a disappointing fourth and fifth respectively. Team USA also had a tough time in the floor exercise, as Sam Mikulak finished in eighth after winning the qualifying round.

Whitlock continued his excellent Games with his second gold medal of the day in the pommel horse later on, scoring a 15.966. Teammate Louis Smith picked up his second consecutive Olympic silver medal in the event with a 15.833. The United States earned its first medal of the men’s gymnastics competition on the apparatus, as Alexander Naddour took bronze.
