Olympics Men’s Basketball: Australia vs Venezuela
Group A from the Olympics men’s basketball preliminary wraps up their games on Sunday at Rio 2016. Team USA will finish atop the group, but not without a bit of drama to finish up their play. One team that certainly gave the Americans all that they could handle and more was Andrew Bogut and Australia. Now looking to finish second place in Group A, Australia finishes their group stage action with a game against Venezuela.
Australia have been impressive from the jump in Rio as they’ve been one of the more domineering forces. Bogut has proved to be a tremendous asset for the Aussies on both ends of the floor, particularly defensively. However, it’s really been the offense of Patty Mills that has been the X-factor. The sharp-shooting guard has been letting it fly at will and converting more often than not. If Mills and Bogut can continue like this, they should have no problems with Venezuela and should be on the podium at the end of the tournament.
Venezuela technically still remain alive for a berth in the knockout rounds, but just barely. They sit in fifth place in Group A entering this matchup against Australia. So they not only need to beat a superior team on Sunday, but also need Serbia to lose in their matchup to end the night. If one or neither of those outcomes don’t play out, the Venezuelans will be going home.
