Many viewers of the Olympics don’t fully grasp the concept of synchronized swimming. In fact, many would venture to say that it isn’t a sport. However, when you’re talking about the endurance, precision, and teamwork that it takes, how is synchronized swimming anything but? There isn’t an answer to that. So as the Rio 2016 synchronized swimming events get started on Sunday, August 14, fans should undoubtedly examine just how much of a sport it is.

Synchronized swimming will only be dipping its toe into the proverbial Olympics pool on Sunday. Though there are two major competitions at the Games, there will only be one featured on Day 9. Moreover, that one event will only feature the preliminaries. Even still, the Duet Free Routine preliminaries should still captivate those smart enough to watch them.

24 teams from countries all over the world will be competing in the preliminaries, but only the best will advance to the final on August 16. Russia’s Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina established that they best in synchronized swimming coming into the Games. While they’re favored to win gold, Lolita Ananasova and Anna Voloshyna of Ukraine could contend as well. Also in contention will be China’s Huang Xuechen & Sun Wenyan. All three teams will obviously compete on Sunday and you won’t want to miss a second of their routines. Additionally, you won’t want to miss any of the event at all.
