Olympics volleyball results: August 14
Recapping the final day of pool play in the women’s volleyball tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The quarterfinals for the women’s volleyball tournament are set after pool play concluded on Sunday.
Team USA advanced to the quarterfinals as the top seed after a four-set win over China, although it was one of its toughest matches of the tournament. After piling up service errors in a first set lot, the United States took the next three 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 for the victory. Jordan Larson-Burbach had another strong contest with 18 points on 15 spikes.
The Netherlands claimed second place in Pool B with a wild five-set win over Serbia in the most important match of the day for positioning. Judith Pietersen had 20 points to lead the Dutch, who nearly blew a two set lead before taking the final frame 15-8.

Italy closed out Pool B action with its first win of the tournament against Puerto Rico, but neither will advance to the quarterfinals. Paola Ogechi Egonu had 17 points to get the Italians on the board.
First place in Pool A was up for grabs when Brazil hosted Russia, with both teams entering the match undefeated. The Brazilians won the first two sets 25-23, 25-21 before holding off a late Russia rally to win the third 25-21.
While South Korea couldn’t improve its third place position, it still rolled to a comfortable sweep of Cameroon. The Cameroonians head home with no wins and just one point for the tournament.

The fourth and final qualifying spot in Pool A was at stake in a match between Japan and Argentina. Japan rolled to a sweep, holding off Argentina 25-23 in the third set behind 18 spikes from Yuki Ishii.
