The speculation surrounding Ryan Lochte being robbed in Rio was confirmed by Lochte himself.

The big question from Sunday morning in Brazil has been whether or not American swimmer Ryan Lochte was robbed. Reports came in that Lochte was robbed, but the International Olympic Committee said that the U.S. Committee denied any weird or dangerous activity took place. That’s strange, being that multiple people around the situation have confirmed Lochte was robbed.

Ryan Lochte is one of those people. According to a friend of Ryan Lochte, Lochte’s mother and Lochte himself, the six-time Olympic gold medalist was indeed robbed at gunpoint on Saturday night.

Flavio Perez, a representative of Brazilian swimmer Thiago Pereira, also confirmed that Lochte was robbed. Perez said that Lochte and Pereira were both unharmed and it occurred after a birthday celebration at a Brazilian nightclub.

"“Thiago Pereira and his wife Gabriela Pauletti were in Club France, the French house in Brazil, and they were celebrating the birthday of a friend in common,” said Perez, Pereira’s spokesman. “Lochte was also in the same place, commemorating the same birthday. Ryan and Thiago are friends. Thiago and his wife left earlier, they left alone, the two of them. Thiago and his wife went back to their hotel. Then Thiago, on finding out what happened, called Ryan. Ryan is well, and Thiago said that the robbery, according to Ryan, was in the taxi. The taxi was robbed.”"

Brazilian police also issued this curious official statement on Sunday afternoon about the Lochte situation:

"The Civil Police were not notified about the robbery which an American swimmer suffered after leaving a party. The institution is investigating the incident, on the base of information circulated by the press. The American Consulate was contacted and said it had not been notified either. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that the US Committee denied the crime. The investigation is in progress."

Lochte’s mother adds her name to the list that confirmed the robbery in an interview with USA Today.

“I think they’re all shaken up. There were a few of them,” Ileana Lochte said. “No, they were just, they just took their wallets and basically that was it.”

The Associated Press added this note about the Lochte investigation and who potentially robbed him and three teammates who also accompanied him to the party.

The investigation is still ongoing and more details are being brought to the light as we speak.
