5. Ichiro Suzuki

If the Marlins just want to ride it out and not do anything drastic, then Ichiro Suzuki is the guy to go with. Despite the fact that he is 42 years old and is closing in on being 43, Ichiro is a veteran and can be relied on. He’s not the best option in the world at this point, but he knows how to get on base.

The Marlins can’t just go out and trade for whomever right now. The deadline has passed and they have to hope that a player they like lands on waivers. The likelihood of that happening is impossible to gauge and that’s going to make it even more difficult for them to make such a move.

Ichiro is far from the player that he once was, but it’s not like they’re asking him to play the entire season out there. They just need him to hold it down the best he can for the last six or so weeks of the season. He’s more than capable of doing that as well.

The good news is that the rosters expand to 40 players in September. That will allow the Marlins to bring fresh bodies up to spell Ichiro on certain days. It’s a big hole to fill in the lineup, but having a veteran is always key for a team.
