The 2016 Rio Olympics Canoe/Kayak sprint events got started on Monday, as four competitions had their preliminary and semifinal rounds.

The Men’s Canoe Single 1000m got the sprint events started on Monday, and just like in 2012, Germany’s Sebastian Brendel dominated. Brendel had the fastest time during the preliminaries, posting a 3:58.04 mark, ensuring his spot in Tuesday’s final. Brazil’s Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos and Moldova’s Seghei Tarnovschi also advanced to the final after the preliminary round, as they both won their heats as well. They will be joined by five others on Tuesday, as the eight go for the gold medal. If Brendel can win, he will repeat as the gold medal winner in the event.

The Women’s Kayak Double 500m was the second event to take place on Monday, and just like in the Men’s canoe single 1000m, the reigning gold medal winners were in the mix for a repeat. Germany’s team of Tina Dietze and Franziska Weber looked just as dominant as they did in 2012, advancing to the finals by posting the second-best time in the preliminaries. Poland’s Beata Mikolajczyk and Karolina Naja will have a chance to avenge their bronze finish in 2012, as they qualified for the finals by having the best time in the semifinals on Monday.

In the Women’s Kayak Single 200m, New Zealand’s Lisa Carrington was just as good as advertised, finishing with the best time in the preliminaries. The time ensured her a spot in the finals, as she will look to repeat as the gold medal winner. 2012 silver medalist Natasa Dusev-Janics will not have a chance for a gold, as she was eliminated in the semifinals.

In the final event of Monday’s action, the men battled it out in the Men’s Kayak Single 1000m. Adam van Koeverden of Canada won a silver medal in the event during the 2012 London Olympics, but he was eliminated in the semifinals. Germany’s Max Hoff, the bronze medal finisher from London, will get a chance to go for the gold, as he secured his spot in the finals on Monday. Australia’s Murray Stewart had the best time of the day, cruising to a 3:32.60 mark in the semifinals.
