Day nine of 2016 Rio Olympics table tennis is in the books and team play is heading into the semifinals.
As casual spectators of the Olympics, we may not realize what type of dominance is happening right before our very eyes. Day 10 of Olympics table tennis is in the books and one country stands head and shoulders above the rest.
The men’s and women’s Chinese national teams have been dominating the field of play so far in these Olympics and there might not be anyone who can stop them. Even in singles play, the Chinese dominated as Ma Long and Zhang Jike won gold and silver, respectively, for the men and Ding Ning and Li Xiaoxia won gold and silver for women.
Japan, Germany, South Korea and China advanced to the semifinals for the men on Sunday afternoon and China will be playing Germany in the women’s gold medal match with Singapore and Japan heading to the bronze medal contest Tuesday.
Here are the full results from Monday’s men’s and women’s team action.
Men’s semifinals
China swept Great Britain in three straight sets on Sunday and also took care of South Korea on Monday. South Korea will be playing Germany in the bronze medal match on Wednesday.
Japan took on a talented Germany team on Monday afternoon and advanced to the gold medal match after a four-set win.
Both the bronze and gold medal matches take place Wednesday.
Women’s semifinals
Germany and Japan faced off in the only women’s matchup of the day on Sunday. The German team took down Japan in five sets to advance to the gold medal match. Japan will play in the bronze medal match on Tuesday against Singapore who lost to China in straight sets Monday.
The medal matches for women will take place Tuesday.
