Rio Olympics, Men’s Weightlifting 2016 live stream – August 15
By Ian Pierno
Only two more classes remain at the 2016 Rio Olympics weightlifting competitions
Zhe Yang looks to provide the ultimate curtain call for an still-dominate Chinese weightlifting group as the final representative from his country to lift in the 105kg medal competition on August 15.
China has already won seven medals, five golds and two silvers, in weightlifting at Rio, with Suping Meng narrowly edging North Korea’s Kuk Hyang Kim on Sunday in the last women’s medal event on Sunday.
China has won 28 weightlifting medals since the turn of the century, never failing to clear a minimum of five at each Olympics.
However, it’s Kazakhstan’s Alexandr Zaichikov looking to claim his second major title in as many years after winning the 2015 World Weightlifting Championships after returning from a two-year ban following a positive test for Stanozolol in 2013.
Zaichikov came in second place by a 1kg deficit in both the Snatch and Clean & Jerk, but won the competition (a combination of both lifts) by double digits.
19-year-old Armenian Simon Martirosyan is also searching for his first medal at the senior Olympics, having cruised to an easy gold in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in China.
More recently, Martirosyan won bronze in the 105kg class at the 2016 European Championships in Norway.
After narrowly missing a spot on the podium with a fourth place finish at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Nurudinov has built up his resume over the past four years in preparation to make a medal attempt in Rio. His personal best of 432kg, achieved in 2014, is 11kg higher than the weight Zaichikov lifted in the 2015 World Weightlifting Championships.
More recently, Nurudinov posted 426kg in the 2016 Asian Championships in his home country, good for another fourth place finish (though, first in the Snatch lift).
Ukraine’s Oleksiy Torokhtiy won the competition at the 2012 London Olympics, defeating Iran’s silver medal finisher Navab Nasirshelal and Poland’s bronze medal finisher Bartlomiej Bonk with each medalist finishing within 1kg of the next. This trio will not be competing Monday.
