The track at the 2016 Rio Olympics is flooding while there are supposed to be several events taking place on Monday night

Monday night was supposed to be an eventful one in Olympics track and field at Rio 2016. It was supposed to feature the Men’s 110m hurdles preliminaries, the Women’s 400m hurdles competition, and even the Men’s 800m and Women’s 400m finals. However, now it looks like that may not happen. On Monday, torrential downpours affected the Rio area and now it appears as if the Olympics track is flooding.

There were first reports coming from BBC that the track was flooding in Rio. However, there was still plenty of speculation about just how bad it was flooding and what else was going to happen.

However, that’s when the pictures started coming out of Rio and that’s when it became abundantly clear that everyone was going to have an Olympic sized problem on their hands. It became clear that things were going to have to be put on hold in a big way from Rio.

Here’s a look at the track itself via Pat Forde:

Apparently it only got worse from there. And if you think that amount of standing water on the track was bad, here’s what was going on elsewhere in regards to flooding in Rio:

At least all of that water isn’t green, right?

After running an initial two heats in the Men’s 110m Hurdles preliminaries, officials at least did make the wise decision to delay the track and field events on Monday. There’s still no word on when things will resume or if they even will on Monday night.

For a while, it seemed like much of the bad publicity Rio had received leading up to the Olympics may have just been a lot of smoke with no fire. Now that the track is flooding on the day of the track and field events, though, it’s safe to say that there are still plenty of issues at the Games.

Update

Despite standing water still on the track, officials think they have it under control and will still run the race.
