A look at the Premier League table after the first round of matches.

Chelsea played West Ham in the final game of the first round of matches in the 2016-17 Premier League season. Antonio Conte’s new team struggled at times, but ultimately came away with all three points thanks to a late Diego Costa winner.

That win moves Chelsea up to third place, while West Ham are all the way down in 17th, one place above the relegation zone. The season is still too young to draw any conclusions, but it was a good weekend for some of the league’s biggest clubs.

Manchester United top the table thanks to a 3-1 win away to Bournemouth, Liverpool sit second after putting four goals past Arsenal and Manchester City are fifth after a narrow win against Sunderland in Pep Guardiola’s first game in charge.

The big surprise there is Hull, who sit in fourth pace after beating defending champions Leicester on Saturday. It was an excellent performance by the Tigers, but it seems unlikely they will stay in the Champions League places for long.

The table makes for grim viewing for Burnley and Crystal Palace fans. Those two were among the favorites to get relegated ahead of the season and opening-weekend losses against beatable opponents (Swansea and West Brom, respectively) have not helped matters.

Arsenal, meanwhile, find themselves in 14th place, which is perhaps higher than they would have hoped having conceded four goals at home to Liverpool. The three goals they managed has helped them jump above Leicester and West Ham, among others, but they will want to put the loss behind them quickly against Leicester next week.

The Premier League is back for the next round of matches on Friday, when Manchester United take on Southampton at Old Trafford in what is expected to be record-signing Paul Pogba’s first game in his second stint at the club.
