Sweden is coming off of one of the biggest upsets in Olympic soccer history. They knocked out the current World Cup and the 2012 Olympic champions, the United States. The match was tied 1-1 after extra time and was sent to penalty kicks, the first time a women’s soccer match in the Olympics has gone to penalties. It came down to the last kick for Sweden, and Lisa Dahlkvist made the final shot, sending her country to the semifinals. After failing to move past the quarterfinals in 2008 and 2012, the Swedish team finds themselves in the semifinals for the first time since 2004, when they finished fourth.
Sweden will be looking to ride the momentum that they have with this huge win, and look to advance against a strong Brazilian team. Brazil is coming off of a close win themselves in the quarterfinal match. Brazil won a dramatic match over Australia in penalty kicks. After extra time the score was 0-0, which sent the game to penalty kicks. The host nation won 7-6 an secured a spot in the semifinals for the fifth time in team history. After their 2012 Olympic run ended in the quarterfinals, it was very important for Brazil to make it further this year, especially in front of their home fans.
