Olympics volleyball results: August 15

Recapping an exciting final day of pool play in the men’s volleyball tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The field for the men’s volleyball quarterfinals at the 2016 Rio Olympics is now set after the final day of pool play on Monday.

After losing its first two matches to begin the tournament, Team USA racked up its third consecutive victory with a sweep over Mexico to advance with nine points in Pool A. Mexico held close in the first set in a 25-23 loss, but the United States pulled away in the final two frames as four different players had at least 11 points.

Canada pulled off its second upset of the tournament, beating first place Italy in four sets to move to four points in pool play and advance. Gavin Schmitt had 25 points in the top individual performance of the day, as Canada put the match away 25-21 after losing the third set.

Monday night closed with a quarterfinal spot on the line between Brazil and France in front of a loud hometown crowd. The two teams split the first two sets, but the hosts were able to pull away 25-20 in the third and come from behind to win the fourth 25-23.  Wallace de Souza continued hist strong tournament with 21 points to lead Brazil.

Poland locked up the top spot in Pool B with an easy 25-18, 25-15, 25-17 sweep of winless Cuba. Captain Michal Kubiak had 10 spikes to lead a balanced team effort from Poland, which enters the quarterfinals with a five-set loss to Russia as its only blemish.

Argentina matched Poland’s 12 points in pool play with a quick sweep of Egypt. The Argentinians will be the second seed from the pool, as their only loss of the tournament so far was to Poland.

Russia moved to 11 points for the tournament with a sweep over Iran to close out pool play. Maxim Mikhaylov had 18 points for Russia to lead all scorers. The Iranians still did enough to advance to the quarterfinals as the fourth seed from Pool B.
