Olympics Women’s Basketball, Quarterfinals: Australia vs Serbia
Australia entered the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball competition as the odds-on favorite to win the silver medal. Moreover, you could argue they’re the only team that can even stay on the same floor as Team USA. Tuesday marks the start of the road to find out if that’s the case as it’ll be Australia vs Serbia to tip off the quarterfinals of the event.
Living up to the hype, Australia finished the group stage undefeated to win Group A and advance to the opposite side of the bracket of the United States. Marianna Tolo has been a force to be reckoned with on the interior for the Aussies and no one outside of the Americans really has an answer for what she’s capable of on their roster. Subsequently, expect the Aussies to go to their human cheat code time and again on Tuesday morning and pull away relatively early.
That said, Serbia isn’t just going to roll over and die in the quarterfinals. Sure, they had to claw to finish in fourth in Group B. However, this team still showed tremendous peaks of performance. If they can get to one of those peaks on Tuesday, they might have a chance at pulling off the upset and ousting Australia in the quarterfinals. That’s be disappointing because it’d rob fans of the USA vs Australia final, but it most certainly would be exciting still.
