Olympics Women’s Basketball Quarterfinals: Spain vs Turkey

There’s no doubt that the preliminary round of the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball competition was a rigorous affair. With all of the fighting for positioning, these teams have played five tough games. But now the stakes are raised for the quarterfinals on Tuesday, August 16. One key matchup of the round will be the contest between Spain and Turkey.

Spain looked quite masterful at times in group play, stumbling only once in their lone loss to Team USA. Captain Laia Palau has proven to be a player that can not only lead her team on the biggest stage, but can do it with a bit of flair. However, making pretty highlights won’t be of chief importance come Tuesday. Turkey is an experienced veteran team that can win every time out, no matter who their opponent. If Spain wants to keep their hopes of a silver medal or a medal at all alive, staying focused will be vital in the quarterfinals.

Trying to play spoiler for Spain will be a Turkey team that was one of three teams in Group A to go 3-2 in pool play and finish with eight points. That landed them the third seed out of the group, but they could’ve just as easily have been second. Center and captain Nevriye Yilmaz is the real deal and the Turkish women will look for her to lead the way in the frontcourt on Tuesday.
