Here are the results from Olympics Greco-Roman wrestling in the men’s 66 kg and 98 kg competitions for Tuesday, August 16.

The third day of Olympics Greco-Roman wrestling may not have featured any big names, but it was an exciting tournament nonetheless that saw some shocking results early on.

In the 66 kg tournament, Germany’s Frank Staebler was heavily favored to progress to the Gold medal match. He is the top ranked wrestler in the world at 66 kg, and won last year’s World Wrestling Championships.

But in the quarterfinals, he got matched up against 2014 World Wrestling Champion Davor Stefanek and lost 6-2. He made it to the repechage round, where he could at least win bronze, but got stifled by Tomohiro Inoue.

In the Final, Stefanek would face a stiff test in Migran Arutyunyan. The two were evenly matched over the course of six minutes, but once Stefanek scored the last point in a 1-1 contest, he played defense the rest of the way to earn a Gold medal.

Shmagi Bolkvadze and Rasul Chunayev claimed the bronze medals with the latter doing so in dominant fashion, racking up an 8-0 score before the end of the first period.

After Islam-Beka Albiev suffered an early loss in the 66 kg tournament, Islam Magomedov represented Russia’s only hope of winning a wrestling medal for a third straight day. However, he lost in the quarterfinal to Turkey’s Cenk Ildem.

But if there has been anyone that has threatened Russia’s perch at the top of the wrestling chain, it’s Cuba. Yasmany Daniel Lugo Cabrera advanced to the Final in the 98 kg tournament, and had a chance to add a third straight Gold medal for his country. He wouldn’t get it as Artur Aleksanyan of Armenia proved to be too much. Artur took advantage of his par terres and defended very well en route to a 3-0 victory.

Ghasem Rezaei, a Gold medalist in London, lost to Yasmany in the quarterfinals but stormed back in the repechage round, and in the bronze medal match, to get back to the podium in Rio. Ildem took home the other bronze medal after pitching a shutout over Alin Alexuc Ciurariu.

Despite the loss, it has been a successful wrestling campaign for Cuba thus far. But with Armenia claiming a Gold and Silver medal, it was another good day for Eastern Europe.
