Bruce Ellington-San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers appear ready to give the keys to Chip Kelly’s offense to Blaine Gabbert again this year. Gabbert has reportedly won the job from form-er phenom Colin Kaepernick who is still sidelined in practice with what they’re calling “dead arm” (never a good thing for a QB).
Gabbert at QB doesn’t inspire lots of oohs and ahhs, but he should be able to get the ball into the hands of his receivers in the 49ers new-look, up-tempo attack. Remember, Chip Kelly had a pretty successful run with Nick Foles, so Gabbert could make this offense go. If he does get the passing game going, he’ll need some options from a motley crew of receivers left after Anquan Boldin left for Detroit.
The breakout WR so far in training camp has been third-year receiver out of South Carolina, Bruce Ellington. Ellington has been a standout all offseason, and he should be the team’s starting receiver across the field from Torrey Smith. Since Smith has always been a deep-play guy, Ellington could fit in nicely as a possession option over the middle. He’s a longshot who could be well-suited for PPR leagues, and Ellington definitely has potential to breakout in an offense that will need playmakers
Next: Shhhh. He's a deep, deep sleeper
