Olympic taekwondo will have its first of four medal days at the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. Here’s how to watch it all online.
Wednesday, August 17 will be the first of four medal days in Olympic taekwondo at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The four-day event will take place at the Carioca Arena 3 inside of Barra Olympic Park in nearby Barra da Tijuca.
Olympic taekwondo will have medals up for grabs in eight different weight class designations: Men’s 58 kilogram, 68 kilogram, 80 kilogram, and 80+ kilogram; Women’s 49 kilogram, 57 kilogram, 67 kilogram, and 67+ kilogram.
The two weight classes that will be up for Olympic medals on Wednesday will be the Men’s 58 kilogram division and the Women’s 49 kilogram division. The top four seeds in the Men’s 58 kilogram class are Iran’s Farzan Ashourzadeh, South Korea’s Kim Tae-Hun, Portugal’s Rui Braganca, and host nation Brazil’s Venilton Teixeira.
For the Women’s 49 kilogram weight class, the top four seeds are China’s Wu Jingyu, Thailand’s Panipak Wongpattanakit, Croatia’s Lucija Zaninovic, and Brazil’s Iris Sing. As with the Men’s side, Brazil gets a top-four seed no matter what because it is the host nation.
The Men’s 58 kilogram and Women’s 49 kilogram tournament will begin at 8:00 a.m. ET or 9:00 a.m. local time for the folks in Brazil. Quarterfinals will start at 3:00 p.m. local time (2:00 p.m. ET). Semifinals begin at 5:00 p.m. local time (4:00 p.m. ET).
Repechage, meaning those who initially failed to qualify will have another opportunity to advance, will commence at 8:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. ET). The Bronze Medal matches start at 9:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. ET) and the Gold Medal matches begin at 10:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. ET).
While Olympic taekwondo will run throughout the day on Wednesday, twice will American viewers be able to catch it on their television sets. Though it is best to use NBCOlympics.com’s live stream not to miss a second of Olympic taekwondo action on Wednesday, both USA and NBCSN will have coverage of the both the Men’s and Women’s Tournament.
USA will begin airing Olympic taekwondo at 3:15 p.m. ET in conjunction with the Mixed Doubles final in Olympic badminton and the Men’s Team bronze medal match in table tennis. USA will air Olympic taekwondo until 5:00 p.m. ET.

NBCSN will briefly air Olympic taekwondo for an hour late on Wednesday evening. The Men’s and Women’s Flyweight finals (58 kg and 49 kg, respectively) will air on NBCSN at 11:00 p.m. ET in conjunction with the Men’s Team Table Tennis final. NBCSN will wrap up its Olympic coverage at 12:00 a.m. ET midnight on the East Coast.
