After 11 days of the 2016 Rio Olympics, it’s finally time for the knockout round in Olympics men’s handball. That all begins on Wednesday, August 17 when the four matchups in the quarterfinals all get underway. In short, the real action is just beginning.
The quarterfinals will start with Brazil vs France on Wednesday at 9 a.m. ET. France went 4-1 in Group A to tie for the best record in the group, but finished as the two-seed. Meanwhile, Brazil merely went 2-2-1 in Group B and clawed to get into the elimination round and the three seed. It’s clear that the French have the advantage, but Brazil will look to use their home court as a weapon.
Germany and Qatar take the court next at 12:30 p.m. ET in a matchup that’s highly intriguing. Qatar entered the tournament as a dark horse, but underperformed to a degree going 2-2-1. Now they face the top seed out of Group B in Germany that has been playing incredibly well. Will this be Qatar playing to their potential or the Germans maintaining their dominance.
After another break, Denmark and Slovenia square off at 4 p.m. ET. Denmark boasts the best handball player in the world in Mikkel Hansen, but underperformed in going 3-2 in the preliminary round. That puts them in a matchup with Slovenia, a team who went 4-1 in pool play. Will the talent of Denmark finally be the deciding factor?
Perhaps the most impressive team in the group stage was Croatia in Group A and they’ll cap off the day against Poland at 7:30 p.m. ET. Poland just scraped by to get into the elimination round despite winning only two games thus far. It’d be a major upset if they knocked off Croatia, but crazier things have happened.
