During an NFL preseason game on Thursday night, Steelers backup quarterback Landry Jones threw several interceptions in just the first quarter.
Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Landry Jones got off to a rough start in the early going on Thursday night. During his team’s preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Jones tossed two interceptions, and that was just the first quarter.
The game took place in Pittsburgh Thursday night, with Jones once again getting some snaps to get things going. Jones had played in the team’s 30-17 loss against the Detroit Lions in the first week of preseason action. In that game, he was 6-of-12 on completions for 55 yards and a touchdown.
On one play Thursday night, Jones didn’t just throw an interception, but it wound up being a score for the opposition. As seen in the video clip below, cornerback Nolan Carroll ran the ball to the Eagles’ endzone for the touchdown. The play was recorded as a 38-yard pick-six for Carroll.

A second interception occurred during a third down situation with short yardage. Jones tried to get off a short pass to Cobi Hamilton only to have it batted by Leodis McKelvin and intercepted by Malcolm Jenkins. It resulted in a touchback, with the Eagles coming away with the ball again.
On Landry’s pick-six play, there are some people indicating that the pass, originally intended for Sammie Coates, was a miscommunication. After all, the preseason is all about players getting more familiar with one another and in rhythm.

The good news here is that it’s only preseason and Ben Roethlisberger will be taking over as the starter when the regular season begins. To his credit, Jones played decently beyond giving up the early score and interceptions. As of this report, he had thrown nine completed passes out of 15 attempts for 73 yards.
